At Irvine Royal Academy, digital skills are a key focus of our approach to learning. Our Digital Policy ensures that all pupils experience high-quality digital learning, helping them to develop essential personal skills while enhancing their classroom experience.
Our Digital BGE Framework clearly maps how digital skills are embedded across each subject area. This consistent approach allows learners to build, practise, and apply their skills in a meaningful way, ensuring they are developed and reinforced for the future.
Our approach is closely aligned with the North Ayrshire Digital Strategy, which emphasises the importance of digital inclusion, innovation, and preparing young people for a rapidly evolving digital world. By promoting creativity, responsible use of technology, and opportunities for collaboration, we ensure our learners are equipped with the skills needed for future learning, life, and work.
By embedding digital skills across the curriculum, we support young people to become confident, capable, and responsible digital learners.
At Irvine Royal Academy, Google Classroom is our main digital learning platform, providing a consistent and accessible experience for all pupils. Staff have designed their classes using agreed “non-negotiables,” ensuring a clear and familiar layout across all departments. This consistency makes it easier for pupils to navigate and engage with their learning.
Each pupil will have a dedicated Google Classroom for every subject, joining via a unique class code. All learning materials, including documents, presentations, and videos, are stored in one place, making it simple to access classwork at any time. Pupils will complete a range of tasks through the platform, often using individual devices while also collaborating digitally with their peers.
Homework is regularly issued through Google Classroom, with built-in reminders to help pupils stay organised and meet deadlines. The Google Classroom app can also be downloaded onto mobile devices, providing a convenient way for pupils to receive reminders about homework, key dates, and events. Please see the infographic which guides you through the process of signing up to the app on a mobile device.
While the platform is designed to be user-friendly, we recognise that it can take time to become fully confident using all of its features. To support this, our Digital Leaders have created a range of step-by-step guides to help pupils learn how to join classes, access materials, and submit assignments with ease.
Leadership is highly valued at Irvine Royal Academy, and our Digital Leaders play a key role in supporting the school’s digital learning community. These pupils help staff and peers make the most of technology, offering guidance on using platforms like Google Classroom, troubleshooting common issues, and sharing best practices for digital collaboration.
Digital Leaders also create helpful resources, including step-by-step guides and tutorials, and assist in promoting safe, responsible, and innovative use of technology across the school. By taking on these responsibilities, they develop their own leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills while helping to ensure that all pupils have a positive and confident digital learning experience.
